Did you know... According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website, heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States.

Overheating: When traveling in very hot weather, always keep an eye on the temperature warning light. If it goes on, or if the gauge enters the red zone, pull your vehicle over to the side of the road and stop. Keep well away from traffic and park in the shade if possible.

Keep sunscreen and sun hats on hand, just in case your vehicle breaks down and you must wait for help in the sun.

Summertime Risk:

  • Triple-digit temperatures
  • Torrential rains
  • Overheating Flood & Hydroplaning

Summer Weather Driving Tips

  1. Check the battery: Excessive heat can increase the battery fluid’s evaporation level.
  2. Fluid levels: Check the engine oil, transmission, power steering, and brake fluids.
  3. Tire pressure: Improper air pressure can cause a blowout, and don’t forget the spare.
  4. Prepare an emergency kit: Include medications, water bottles, food, extra clothes, a blanket, and a basic first aid kit in case you ever break down.
  5. Safe passengers: Children, people who are elderly, and pets should not be left unsupervised whether the vehicle's engine is on or off.
  6. Fuel: Be extra aware of the fuel gauge in your vehicle in the summer. You don't want to be stranded in blistering heat.
  7. Windshield: Clean your windshield frequently and be sure your washer fluid is full. Bugs, dust, and other debris can build up, making seeing difficult, especially at night.
  8. Plan your trip: Be aware of the route, fuel stops, and try to plan your journey around the hottest times of the day.
  9. Sun glare: Keep sunglasses handy and consider keeping an extra pair in the vehicle.
  10. Air conditioning: Get it checked before the heat is in full swing.
  11. Dehydration: Always keep plenty of water in your vehicle and avoid drinking caffeine or sugar-based drinks. Those who sweat a lot need to pay special attention to their water intake, especially when it's really hot. Symptoms of dehydration include headache, tiredness, and dizziness.
