If you get pulled over/checked…

  • Keep Documents Up-to-Date: Ensure all required documents, such as your Commercial Driver's License (CDL), medical certificate, and vehicle registration, are current and readily accessible.
  • Be Professional and Courteous: Treat the inspector with respect. A positive attitude can go a long way in marking the inspection or check smoother.
  • Maintain a Clean Vehicle (both the interior and exterior). Know where the essential items, such as fire extinguishers, reflective triangles, and safety equipment, are stored.
  • For Commercial Vehicles, know the "Out-of-Service" criteria: Familiarize yourself with the criteria that can result in an out-of-service violation. Address any issues promptly to avoid delays.

Qualities of a Good Driver:

  • Skilled: A good driver should be skilled enough to demonstrate control over the vehicle in various conditions.
  • Knowledgeable: A good driver understands all necessary road rules and has knowledge about their vehicle.
  • Self-Disciplined: Good drivers follow rules, drive responsibly and safely (despite temptations to do otherwise).
  • Patient: Recognize that everyone has different destinations and avoid a competitive/race mentality.
  • Alert: Stay vigilant at all times, and always drive defensively.
  • Basic Mechanical Skills: You don't need to be a mechanic to troubleshoot basic vehicle issues and get help when necessary.
  • Responsibility: Taking care of yourself and your passengers is essential, and also ensures the safety of others on the road.
  • Practice: Regular practice helps improve driving skills and adapt to road situations.
  • Vehicle Care: A good driver maintains their vehicle, ensuring timely servicing and fuel efficiency.
  • Fitness: Physical and mental fitness can improve reaction time, concentration, driving endurance, and stress management.
