Types of distracted driving:
- Visual: Looking at something other than the road.
- Auditory: Hearing something not related to driving.
- Manual: Manipulating something other than the steering wheel.
- Cognitive: Thinking about something other than driving.
Tis' the season to get distracted:
- Plan your trip. Avoid getting lost and/or distracted by the GPS and directions. Be extra careful in areas where drivers are more distracted like shopping plazas, tourist attractions, etc.
- No cell phone use. No texting, emailing, or talking on the phone (even hands-free cell phones are a large distraction).
- Be aware! Others are texting and driving distracted, keep clear of them and their erratic driving.
- Limit distractions: From co-workers, kids, other aggressive drivers, or problems at work/home that may impact your focus.
- Check your mirrors and the area around your vehicle (all sides) frequently. This will also help you to stay awake when you start feeling drowsy and ensure no one is in your blind spot.
- Look far enough down the road so you can react. This gives people time to adjust to you or get out of the way and if you should hit something, a slower speed will minimize damage.
- Always be aware of the space around your vehicle and where you could go in an emergency. Distracted drivers get themselves into problem situations, with no way to avoid an accident. Stay alert and look for an escape!
- Don't get tunnel vision. Usually, this occurs when talking on the phone or daydreaming while driving.
